Statement of Professional Goals
As specified in my Curriculum Vitae, I have taken advantage of many opportunities to learn and grow through a variety of educational and employment experiences. I am a person who can always find something to be interested in and learn about and the thirst for knowledge and the desire to share has led me to the field of education. I believe that teaching is the science and art of living. If, after all, “I think, therefore I am,” then the best kind of life, by my estimation, must involve not simply forming one’s own thoughts but aiding others in developing that proof of existence and creating, for themselves, new, unique, and critical thoughts. I see myself as both a traveller and guide on a journey of discovery.
Currently, I am the Title I Parent Involvement Coordinator for the Colleton County School district, and many of the artifacts in this portfolio were designed to serve an audience made up of parents from my community. In the near future, I desire to retain this position, expanding my duties to improve parental skill and involvement to include provision of distance parent education and implementation of technology to enable parents to support their children’s academic success.
My program’s motto is, “Helping Parents – Help Children – Help Our Community,” and I believe each item is of equal importance in fulfilling the federal mandate to improve educational attainment for the economically disadvantaged. For me, personal success is measured not only by what I achieve, but by what I enable others to achieve. To that end, I intend to continue to work with those who struggle against the greatest disadvantages by facilitating their basic skill development into critical and creative thinking. I will use the ADDIE instructional design model and AECT standards to design, implement, and evaluate effective instruction for individual, small group, and large group instruction of parents and children.
I am currently engaged a doctoral program that will allow me to conduct research into the impact of economics and technology on educational attainment and develop educational programs to benefit disadvantaged populations. I believe the Educational Technology program has provided me with information on critical topics in education and educational technology, helped me to develop technical skills to design distance education formats and content, and broadened the scope of my ambitions. Please begin with the Artifacts Page that comprises the bulk of this portfolio and demonstrates the skills and knowledge I have acquired as evaluated by AECT Standards. The big picture- a narrative that highlights the connections among the standards, artifacts, and my professional goals, can be found on the Reflection Page. Direct links to each artifact, important definitions, and downloads of required programs are available on the Resources Page.
